In late-2006, ten members from Melton Police committed to walk the Kokoda Trail. With the support of the local community fundraising took place and the trek was completed in 2008 with approximately $60,000 raised and donated to the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. Ensuing discussion saw the formation of the first metropolitan branch – the Westgate Branch. The branch proceeded to raise funds and gain support from the community in the west of Melbourne and with the support of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation raised $125,000.
In October 2013 the branch completed a project at the Footscray Hospital Accident and Emergency department which was formally dedicated in honour of Senior Constable Tim Lewczuk, who lost his life in the line of duty on the 10th of May 1997. With the support of the foundation and VicRoads, the bridge on the Western Ring Road where Tim lost his life, was named in his honour in 2015.
The most recent memorial project successfully completed by the Branch was Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department Resuscitation Unit, dedicated to fallen police officer Constable Clare Frances Bourke at a ceremony in August 2017. A revamped and improved resuscitation unit helps to ensure the best delivery of urgent medical treatment to the Wyndham community.
The committee are passionate and committed to creating a lasting legacy within the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. These projects are not possible without the efforts of a volunteer committee and the community of the Western Suburbs.
