On Tuesday 29 September, communities across Victoria will come together to remember Victoria Police members who have lost their lives in the line of duty, honour their service and sacrifice, and say thank you to those who continue to protect and serve our community. Blue Ribbon Day coincides with National Police Remembrance Day, providing an opportunity for Victorians to pause and remember the lives of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of others. Currently, 178 members of Victoria Police have died in the line of duty.

On Blue Ribbon Day, everyone can show their support for Victoria Police members by wearing a blue ribbon or a blue ribbon badge.

Remembering lives by saving others

Every year, Blue Ribbon Day is hosted by the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, a community-based charity dedicated to honouring fallen police members through practical projects that benefit the wider community.

The Foundation works with Victorian public hospitals to fund new and improved medical facilities and emergency equipment, which then get dedicated in memory of members who have died in the line of duty. To date, the Foundation has funded over 70 projects in public hospitals across Victoria, including 44 projects in regional hospitals. These initiatives ensure that the sacrifice of fallen police members is remembered, and that projects named after them continue to make a difference by helping provide life-saving care to Victorians.

Blue Ribbon Day has its origins in the outpouring of community support following the tragic deaths of Senior Constable Rodney Miller and Sergeant Gary Silk, who were killed in the line of duty on 16 August 1998.

The following year, the Blue Ribbon Day campaign continued on 29 September 1999, coinciding with National Police Remembrance Day. Since then, it has become an important day for remembrance, community recognition, and support for Victoria Police.

Commemorative events across Victoria

In Melbourne, the day of remembrance will begin at 10 am, with the march and parade starting from Princes Bridge, along St Kilda Road to the Victoria Police Memorial, Kings Domain, followed with a morning commemorative service at the Victoria Police Memorial.

The commemorations will conclude with the End of Day Reflection service for National Police Remembrance Day at the Victoria Police Memorial at 4:30pm at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

These services honour Victoria Police members who have died in the line of duty, as well as police from across Australia who have lost their lives in service during the past 12 months.
